I am a survivor of the non-profit industrial complex which means that I have worked for many organizations where I was able to do really good work in the community, but the organizations internally were toxic, abusive, had high turnover rates, and the work culture did not align with the mission of the organization. These spaces were not psychologically safe nor allowed for creativity or vulnerability. I was doing work that aligned with my values, but my humanity was in many ways was not being valued. This caused mental and physical anguish, and when I talked to my colleagues and peers, I realized that I was not alone.
I sat with these experiences and the solution that came to mind is that I wanted to work within organizations that wanted to shift their dynamic and live up to their stated vision to ensure no one else ever again had to be abused in the name of non-profit work. Not everyone can freelance or work for themselves. People must work somewhere and where they work should add to their growth and development. Work does not have to be synonymous with pain and suffering.
We can live in a social justice present in our work lives if the organizations that do social justice work choose to create spaces, policies, and work cultures that truly honor the mission and vision of the organization.
